Arrive Alive Chesterfield: Sober Rides Program

Group of teenagers on a road trip.

To help keep our community safe, SAFE’s “Arrive Alive Chesterfield” program provides free or reduced-cost rides to prevent impaired driving during high-risk holidays.

  • Arrive Alive Chesterfield is tentatively scheduled to operate on:

    • Cinco de Mayo

    • Memorial Day

    • July 4th holiday

    • Labor Day

  • The program is available as long as your trip starts, ends, or stays within Chesterfield County. (For example: starting in Richmond and heading to Chesterfield is covered.)

  • SAFE partners with Lyft and/or Uber to offer rides, modeled after nationally recognized programs such as the Washington Regional Alcohol Program’s SoberRide® and Drive Safe Hampton Roads’ 757 Sober Ride. Funding support is provided by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

  • Alcohol-impaired driving continues to be a serious concern in Chesterfield County:

    • Crashes: 332 in 2021, 329 in 2022, and 356 in 2023 (DMV data)

    • Arrests: 1,338 in 2022, 1,085 in 2023, and 850 in 2024 (CCPD data)

Nationwide, drunk driving claims 34 lives every day—that’s one person every 42 minutes (NHTSA).

  • SAFE reminds everyone to:

    • Plan ahead and designate a sober driver.

    • Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

    • Protect your friends—if you’re the designated driver, stick to it.

    • Intervene if someone you know is about to drive impaired—take their keys.

    • Report dangerous drivers to law enforcement immediately.
