Community coalitions seek not so much to create change in individuals as they seek individuals to create change in their communities.

Preventing substance abuse is a community task. Everyone has a role to play, even if they are not directly involved with SAFE – as individuals making choices, parents talking with kids and communities developing environments and values that support substance abuse free living. But there are many ways SAFE can use your help.

Work on a Specific Issue

SAFE has a variety of committees and task forces that can use your help:

  • The Illegal Use of Legal Products Task Force develops initiatives to prevent of prescription and over-the-counter medication abuse and inhalant abuse.
  • The Underage Drinking Task Force develops and implements strategies to address underage drinking in Chesterfield County.
  • The Needs Assessment Task Force oversees the gathering of a variety of data and community input to assess issues around substance abuse.
  • The Communications Committee develops a communications plan for SAFE and assists in publicizing and promoting SAFE activities.

Volunteer For One-Time Events or Short-Term Projects

Bandfest
Help plan the annual bandfest or volunteer to assist the day of the event.

Special events
Man the SAFE display and hand out literature at a variety of health/safety fairs and community events.

Coaches Drug-Prevention Initiative
Help make connections with community athletic leagues serving upper elementary/middle school children to expand the coaches drug-prevention initiative. Read more...

Serve on the SAFE Board of Directors

The board of directors meets three times a year to set the priorities for the coalition and oversee its functions Persons are elected to the board in the fall of each year. Contact us to apply.

The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors and School Board also appoint members to the SAFE board. Contact your board member or visit chesterfield.gov if you’re interested.

Donate

  • Make a donation to SAFE through the United Way.
  • Make a donation to SAFE directly. Checks should be made out to SAFE Inc. and mailed to SAFE, c/o Chesterfield Youth Planning and Development, P.O. Box 40, Chesterfield, VA 23832.
